Salesforce Winter ’21 Release Digest

For more information on the new Flow layout feature shown above reference the ‘Flows – UI updates’ release topic.

The Winter ‘21 Release hit sandboxes and some production orgs in September, and will be rolling out to remaining orgs October 10th and 17th, depending on your instance.

Notes

Lightning App Builder – Dynamic Forms and Dynamic Actions

Dynamic forms and dynamic actions launched in beta in the Summer ‘20 release, and will now be generally available for custom objects. With this tool, admins can create highly customizable lightning pages in the Lightning App Builder. Fields, sections of fields and action buttons can be displayed or hidden conditionally. If users utilize different fields at different stages in an object’s lifecycle, dynamic forms will help simplify the page layout.

The Lightning App Builder will also feature an “Analyze” button which provides suggestions to improve page performance.

Auto-add new custom fields to custom report types (beta)

A little feature but a very useful one! Admins can enable “auto add new custom fields to custom report type layouts” under Reports and Dashboards Settings.

Flows – functional enhancements

Salesforce continues to improve Flow functionality and has made it even more user-friendly in the Winter ’21 update.

Flows can now be triggered to run before a record is deleted. When a user deletes an object, you may want to delete certain related objects as well. Now, you can automate this task with a record-triggered flow.

Flows can now be configured to run only when the record is changed to meet certain criteria. This has been a feature of workflow rules and process builder, and will now be a part of flow, too.

Custom logic comes to more flow elements in this release, allowing filter criteria based on AND, OR and custom operators on Get Records elements.

Flows – UI updates (beta/pilot*)

Auto-Layout Canvas is rolling out in Beta, which helps admins build orderly flows in clean lines and brings the menu of flow elements onto the canvas.

Flow debugging also gets a visual update (in beta), giving admins the ability to see the debug process of autolaunched flows right on the flow canvas.

A new pilot feature will allow more flexibility with screen flow formatting, including multiple columns.

Lightning Email Template Builder

Users can now create and edit Email Templates in a new builder that matches the user interface of the Lightning App Builder. Image-rich emails can be created on modern templates using the drag-and-drop interface.

Deleted Fields

Admins can now view deleted fields under Object Manager > Fields and Relationships in Lightning without having to switch over to the Classic interface.

Optimizer App

The interactive Optimizer App was introduced in Summer ‘20, and gets more features in this release. Users can now run the Optimizer on a schedule, view org metric history, and assess more metrics in an org than ever before.

*Beta features are included as a part of the release; the multi-column screen flow pilot is available by signing up in the Trailblazer community.
